Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter & Under the Hood

Bloated corpses buoy a castaway’s life raft in TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER, a grisly parable taken from the pages of Alan Moore’s WATCHMEN. One of the book’s most riveting detours, the comic-within-a-comic (read by one of the book’s characters) ominously paralleled the main events of the graphic novel. Although the beloved story was cut from Zach Snyder’s big-screen version of WATCHMEN, it’s recast here as a standalone animated program aimed at mollifying completists and ramping up interest in the adaptation. Paired with the macabre take on ROBINSON CRUSOE is another lopped-off limb from the comic: UNDER THE HOOD, a mix of live action and CGI that looks back at the salad days of Nite Owl and the Minutemen.

Paris 36

While America was going through the Depression in the 1930s, France was suffering a similar crisis. This musical comedy from Christophe Barratier brings a lighter touch to those days, but it doesn’t gloss over the difficulties of the people living through them. A trio of blue-collar men living in the Faubourg neighborhood of Paris struggle to survive, but they think they may have found their salvation when they decide to reopen a local music hall. Pigoil (Gérard Jugnot), Milou (Clovis Cornillac), and Jacky (Kad Merad) will create a song-filled production that make bring life back to their neighborhood, and the appearance of a beautiful singer (Nora Arnezeder) certainly won’t hurt their efforts.

Enter Palmer (LeGros), a laid-back ex-athlete who says he’ll give Sherman a ride to southern California if Sherman will help him repaint his car. But the allure of the Napa Valley and a pretty blonde (Brooke Nevin) might just cause Sherman to take a much-needed detour from his perfectly planned life. SHERMAN’S WAY also stars Enrico Colatoni, M. Emmett Walsh, and Thomas Ian Nicholas.
